WBOY sports director, Nick Farrell, joined the Notre Dame staff at the beginning of the school year to lead the award winning Irish Online Network. The network, which was started by Reuben Perdue two years ago, has evolved from Perdue and two students broadcasting sporting events to a broadcasting class and now a student newspaper will be added. Live and on demand events will continue to be added to the network which can be accessed through the school website.

Farrell, who graduated from Waynesburg University in 2015 with a degree in communications (triple emphasis in sports broadcasting, journalism, and electronic media), started at WBOY in May 2015 as a news reporter before being promoted to sports director a year later.

His interest in broadcasting began his sophomore year at St. Joseph Catholic High School in Natrona Heights, PA where Farrell had the opportunity to work with Bob Tatrn. He then met Lanny Fattare, a professor at Waynesburg University, who was the play by play voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates for 33 years. Farrell credits both Tatrn and Fattare as mentors in his career and said, “Both were big on teaching the next generation of broadcasters and I hope to accomplish that with the Irish Online Network.”

Farrell will also act as the adviser for a student run newspaper called the Irish Gazette. The first edition of the paper can be found here. Watch school events live and on demand at notredamewv.org and click on the ION link.
